Achieving and Maintaining Individual Excellence Paper Where does a person develop the lesson of personal growth and learning? I believe it is through the values and ethics they will carry through life. Most lessons are learned from the family who one is raised in, while others may be learned from peers or society in general. My own values are a mixture of all those along with the experiences I have had throughout my lifetime. Having overcome many obstacles in my own life, helping others find ways to overcome their own obstacles has long been a goal of mine. My objective in getting my degree in Human Services is to help the most vulnerable of society, children. As a child, I often wished I had somebody who would understand and†¦show more content†¦This caused me to look outside the family for acceptance, bringing me both happiness and misery. As a child, school became the place where I felt I was able to achieve and I would strive to do my best for the inner satisfaction it provided, and for the attention I was able to re ceive from my teachers. Knowing that my mother would not care whether my grades were good or not, I never felt I was reaching my academic goals for her sake, but for an unattainable goal that would make me feel accomplished. This result never came, and my early adulthood was spent consuming drugs and living a solitary existence. Never having been shown how to grow up and live like an adult, I struggled with this process for too long. In order to figure out whom I was and who I was going to be, I separated from my family for many years. Although many of these years were a struggle, I eventually grew up and accepted myself for whom I am and have taught myself new behaviors. As a mother, I recognize the importance of providing my daughter with love and acceptance that will allow her to develop a high level of self-esteem to help her mature into a functioning adult.
